Travel Tips for Orlando

If you’re taking the kids, you probably are not going to get out of the pricey project of Disney World and/or Universal when you’re in Orlando.

But if you’re sans enfants, (or if your kids have been there/done that) there are free, or at least very affordable, activities to capture the imagination even in the heart of fantasy land.

The art scene is happening in Orlando, and the CityArts Factory’s collection of downtown galleries features both local and international artists. The rotating collections change monthly, and admission is free Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM till 6 PM.

Also check out the Mennello Museum of American Art, featuring a lakeside sculpture garden that is always open to the public. Special exhibits as well as their permanent collection will astound you, and there is no charge if you visit the second Sunday of each month. Even if you have to pay, the priciest admission fee is $5.00.

Outdoor activities are abundant in Orlando, where a mile-long sidewalk meanders around downtown’s Lake Eola Park. The city’s skyline view is stunning from this vantage point; feed the trumpeter swans or rent a paddleboat for a lazy afternoon or evening. After sunset in the summer, nightly light and musical fountain shows entertain and delight, and monthly movies are fun too.

Nearby, the Harry P. Leu Gardens showcase tropical plants, aromatic herbs, citrus groves and roses. Stroll through the butterfly garden, admire the camellias or just soak in the ambiance for gardening inspiration when you get back home. Admission is $10 for adults, and $3 for children.

Orlando Brewing is a great stop after a day full of art and flowers. Monday through Saturday, you can take an evening walk-through of the beer production process and have a taste of the product. Afterwards, live entertainment may be on tap.

In the Clermont suburb, stop by Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards for their complimentary tours and samples. Learn about the growing, bottling and labeling of their wine, then stay for a few sips from their wide selection. On-site events include a free summer concert series and a grape stomp in August.
