Maybe it’s the advent of technology that prevents us from seeing them, but there seem to be a lot more ghosts in Colonial Williamsburg than we see in the average American town. Maybe it has to do with all the grim devices they employed, or maybe ghost spotting was a form of entertainment way back when. But hey- when Halloween comes around, it’s entertainment once again!
Many of the original Colonial homes in Williamsburg provide guest accommodations, but only since 2016 has the town added Halloween themed events. This year, running from October 15 through October 31, you can take in the Haunting on DoG Street with special evening programs, ghost tours, spooky carriage rides and more.
And when you stay overnight in many of the homes that accommodate visitors, don’t be surprised if you see or feel a few spirits yourself.
Some say that Thomas Jefferson’s ghost still haunts the Market Square Tavern. In another house, guests report seeing a woman sitting in a rocking chair in full period dress. And of those who have stayed at Orrell House, many report all of the furniture turned upside down in their rooms when they return from an evening out. Other eerie experiences like strange cold spots, the scent of pipe tobacco when no one is smoking, and murmuring voices in the night spook visitors to Colonial Williamsburg.
