Service personnel in the States often survive on the tips they make from travelers, and you don’t want to seem cheap. But in Europe, tips are not always expected. Here are some guidelines for gratuity-giving to avoid causing offense or spending needlessly on your next trip.
IN THE US
Shuttle-Bus Drivers
Often overlooked, these folks will welcome a $1 or $2 tip from each passenger. If they have helped you load your bag, or provided extra service, take that into account.
Skycap at Airport
$1- $2 per bag is still the rule, but if you have an enormous amount of luggage, or particularly tricky items to ship, give generously.
Bellhop at Hotel
$1 – $2 per bag is still the rule.
Doorman
$1 – $3
If they just opened the door, that’s one thing. If they called you a cab or helped you stow your luggage, opt for the higher amount.
Hotel Housekeeper
Some of the hardest-working folks in the travel industry are often forgotten. Be sure to tip your maids $2 to $5 per night.
Hotel Concierge
Depending on the task you set them to, consider between $5 and $25 for this service.
Taxi Driver
Typically 15 – 20% of the fare.
Tour-Bus Driver
$3- $5 per day
Tour-Bus Guide
Sometimes a tip is built into the price, but if not, tip these knowledgeable service people $5 – $10 per day. Your trip would be much less interesting without them!
IN EUROPE
Restaurants
Check your bill, and if a service charge has been included, no additional gratuity is needed. Otherwise, a 10% tip is seen as generous, but tip in cash, as not all establishments will let you add a tip to a credit card purchase.
Hotel Porters
€ 1 – € 2 per bag is customary.
Concierge
Again, depending on the help they have provided, € 10 – € 20.
Housekeeping Staff
Although not expected, tipping the chamber maids a few euros at the end of your stay is appreciated.
Taxi Drivers
They generally do not expect tips in Europe, but rounding the fare up to the next euro is standard.
Tour Guides
It is routine to tip guides a few euros for a job well done.
Hair Stylists and Spa Technicians
5 – 10% is the standard in the UK, France and Germany. In Scandinavian countries, tips are not expected.
