Jamaica
One of the largest islands in the Caribbean, this location is an iconic destination for everything you love about the Caribbean; relaxing days that can be as active as you like, from hiking the Blue Mountains to beachcombing, followed by sunsets and reggae rhythms.
When you’re there, make sure to sample their unique creation: the jerk dish. They do it to everything; chicken, pork and other meats are dry-rubbed or marinated with the unique jerk seasoning, then barbequed and served with fried dough and breadfruit for a scrumptious meal. The secret recipe, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board, includes allspice, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, garlic, onions, thyme, salt and Scotch bonnet peppers.
Barbados
Natives from this tropical island are known as “Bajan” – as being from or relating to Barbados. When you’re there, make like the natives and enjoy a meal of flying fish – the national symbol – steamed and served up with couscous. The cuisine of Barbados is influenced by vibes from Africa, Europe and the West Indies. And in between zip lines and snoozing on the beach, be sure to sample some of the signature rum of this country. Plan ahead in case you want to bring a bottle back, and take along a Vinnibag to cushion your bottle for the trip home.
The US Virgin Islands
Composed of three main islands and dozens of cays, this tropical paradise is a feast for the senses. St. Thomas features the capital city of Charlotte Amalie, with stylish boutiques and abundant restaurants. The island of St. John is great for adventures, with a 7,000 acre national park featuring activities like snorkeling, sailing, hiking and bird watching.
Enjoy the Dutch heritage towns on St. Croix, while you sample some of this island’s signature beverage; rum (of course).
