What has Charleston got that other cities don’t have? Its prime oceanfront location on the Atlantic is glorious, but that’s just the beginning. It’s certainly walkable, with a population of less than 130,000 residents, and the Southern hospitality virtually oozes from every charming cobblestone street and winding venue. The Battery Promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, an important location during the Civil War. The first shots of the fracas were fired at Fort Sumter, just across the bay. But you might skip the walking and opt for a horse-drawn carriage ride, reminiscent of times gone by. Dedicated guides will narrate your tour and provide you with amazing facts about Charleston, as you glide through the town. Antebellum architecture abounds, and living history is everywhere in Charleston.

For a peek inside an authentic baronial Italianate manor house, visit Calhoun Mansion at 16 Meeting Street. Originally built in the years following the Civil War, the home was designed to be a testament to the South’s recovery from the war. After many years, it fell into disrepair and was eventually condemned, when a native of Charleston purchased it and invested over 5 million dollars to re-create  its grandeur. This home is a private residence, but is open to the public daily. Featuring 35 rooms and 23 period fireplaces, decorative painting and lighting designed and installed by Louis Comfort Tiffany will not be the only thing to impress.

Charleston is known for its varied cuisine and world-renowned chefs. From quaint, dockside haunts to high-end venues overlooking the bay, the offerings are as varied as a fresh take on grits to oysters on the half-shell. Dig in to lowcountry specialities and “southern sushi” for a gustatory adventure. Get a feel for the old Charleston when you dine in the French Quarter or along the beach.

Family friendly activities abound in the Charleston area. Pristine beaches are just a stone’s throw away, and a great family venue is the South Carolina Aquarium. Besides the typical tanks and offerings, the 4-D Theater incorporates multi-sensory effects, such as water spray and seat vibrations. Mini-gascar is a dedicated spaced designed just for toddlers. Little ones can jump, play, side and run while Mom and Dad grab a quick respite. Get up close and personal with rays, investigate the sea turtle hospital, and enjoy the view of over 5,000 animals at this eco-friendly venue in the heart of Charleston.
